ACRYLIC LASER CUTTING GUIDE · 8 MIN READ

Which materials and projects are suitable for acrylic laser cutting?
A practical guide to acrylic laser cutting.

Acrylic laser cutting is a contact-free method that produces letters, panels, displays, guards, templates and decorative parts to precise dimensions.

Clear acrylic sheet being cut in a CO2 laser machine

Acrylic, technically known as PMMA, is one of the most suitable sheet materials for CO2 laser cutting. Contact-free cutting offers fine detail, repeatable dimensions and clean edges. The result depends directly on the acrylic type, thickness, colour, protective film and the smallest details in the design.

Which acrylic types can be laser cut?

Clear, opal, coloured, mirrored, frosted and textured acrylic sheets can be laser cut according to the project. Whether the material is cast or extruded affects cutting and engraving behaviour.

Cast versus extruded acrylic

Cast acrylic can give a pronounced, even appearance when laser engraved, although thickness tolerance may vary more across a sheet. Extruded acrylic offers more consistent thickness and can produce smooth cut edges, while its engraving appearance differs from cast material. If a project combines cutting, engraving, printing and bending, specify the material type at the outset.

How are thickness and detail limits determined?

Machine power, optics, acrylic colour and required cut quality affect the achievable thickness. As material becomes thicker, speed falls; narrow channels, small holes and closely spaced cut lines can be affected by heat build-up. The thinnest bridge and hole diameter in a design should be planned in proportion to material thickness.

At our Bursa workshop, we produce to project size with a 150 W CO2 laser with a 150 × 100 cm work area and a 100 W CO2 laser with a 90 × 60 cm work area. See our Bursa laser cutting page for machine and application examples.

Which projects use acrylic laser cutting?

  • Signs and letters: Cut logos, built-up-letter details, wayfinding and door numbers.
  • Product display stands: Counter stands, price holders, brochure holders, perfume and cosmetic displays.
  • Machine and protective parts: Windows, enclosure covers, sensor guards and transparent barriers.
  • Control panels: Front panels prepared with holes for buttons, screens and connections.
  • Templates and fixtures: Painting templates, positioning jigs and assembly aids.
  • Decorative products: Wall lettering, tabletop objects, event and lighting components.
  • Technical parts: Spacer parts, covers, washers and special-geometry prototypes.

Can cutting, engraving and UV printing be used together?

An acrylic surface can be laser engraved for a logo, text, dimension line or decorative texture. If a multicolour graphic is required, UV printing can be applied directly or in reverse on the back of clear acrylic. A common technical drawing and reference points should be used to align printed artwork with cut holes.

On machine control panels, cutting, reverse printing and mounting holes can be combined in one production plan so that button, screen and graphic areas fit together.

How is laser-cut acrylic bent and formed?

After cutting, heat bending can create L, U or special-angle forms. This method is used for stands, file holders, product holders, protective covers and tabletop display products. A bend line too close to holes, slots or edges can create stress or cracking risk.

The order of cutting, printing and bending changes with the product. See our acrylic cutting, printing, bending and forming page for the complete process.

Can every plastic be laser cut?

No. A trade name alone is not enough; technical composition and the safety data sheet must be checked. PVC and chlorine-containing plastics are unsuitable for CO2 laser cutting because they can release harmful, machine-corrosive gases. Some materials, including polycarbonate, may also require a different method because of cut quality, burning and colour-change issues.

If the material is unknown, it must not be tested on the laser; request manufacturer documentation. CNC routing, mechanical cutting or another manufacturing method can be considered instead.

A material name is not the same as its chemical composition

The term “plastic”, “foam board” or “clear sheet” is not sufficient for a safe cutting decision. Verify the material by brand, product code and technical data.

How should a laser-cutting file be prepared?

  1. Prepare cut lines as vectors at full scale.
  2. Remove duplicate lines and overlapping contours.
  3. Specify hole diameters, tolerances and critical dimensions.
  4. Include material type, colour, thickness and quantity.
  5. Show bend lines, print areas and the visible face on separate layers.
  6. Request a sample for kerf and assembly tolerance on interlocking parts.

Production details that affect quality

Protective-film type, air assist, bed cleanliness, focus and cutting speed affect edge appearance. Bed gaps and heat deformation should be considered on very small parts. Packaging parts after cutting to prevent scratches on visual surfaces is also part of production.

The right acrylic and the right design should be chosen together

Acrylic laser cutting is a precise, flexible production method for signs, displays, panels, protective covers and special technical parts. Planning material type, thickness, detail size and subsequent printing or bending from the start produces cleaner results. Frequently asked questions

Can acrylic be laser cut?

Yes. Acrylic, known as PMMA, is one of the common materials that can be cut cleanly and precisely with a CO2 laser. The result varies by acrylic type, thickness, colour and machine settings.

Do acrylic laser-cut edges come out glossy?

With suitable material and parameters, a laser-cut edge can look smooth and glossy. Because cast and extruded acrylic behave differently, a sample is recommended.

Can every plastic be cut with a laser?

No. Plastic type must be verified through manufacturer technical data. PVC and chlorine-containing materials are unsuitable for CO2 laser cutting because they can release harmful, corrosive gases.

Can acrylic be bent after cutting?

Yes. With suitable design and production order, cut acrylic can be heat-bent into stands, enclosures, file holders and other forms.

Which file is needed for laser cutting?

Preferably, vector cut lines prepared at full scale are needed. Units, hole diameters, tolerances, quantity and material thickness should be supplied with the file.
