Cable labels and electrical panel labels:
what types are available?

Clear identification helps cables, terminals, devices and panel components be recognised quickly and accurately during installation, maintenance and fault finding.

Laser-engraved cable labels fitted to cables inside an electrical control panel

Cable and panel labels are not used only for order. Accurate identification speeds up installation, commissioning, maintenance and fault diagnosis. In addition to the project's coding system, temperature, moisture, UV exposure, oil, chemical contact and mechanical wear should be considered when choosing a label type.

Main types of cable labels

Label typeHow it is usedSuitable application
Tag fixed with cable tiesThe tag is secured to the cable with one or two tiesThick cables, pipes, valves and field runs
Wrap-around labelWrapped around the cableInside-panel and controlled-environment applications
Heat-shrink sleeveSlid over the cable and shrunk with heatNew installations and identification before terminating ends
Clip-on / holder markerFitted into a dedicated holder or marker slotTerminals, terminal blocks and modular systems
Metal cable labelFixed with a tie, wire or mechanical fastenerOutdoor, high-temperature and heavy-industry conditions

Electrical panel label types

  • Panel identification label: Panel name, project code, serial number and manufacturer information.
  • Push-button and selector-switch label: Start, stop, reset and mode information.
  • Warning and safety sign: Voltage, hazard and unauthorised-intervention warnings.
  • Device function label: The function of fuses, relays, contactors, drives and other components.
  • Terminal and terminal-block label: Matching connection points to the project diagram.
  • Mimic diagram and panel graphic: A surface that shows process flow, device status or a control area.

When a complete front panel, cut-outs and graphics need to be combined into one product, the solutions on our control and command panels page can be considered.

How should the label material be selected?

When layered ABS/Resopal materials are engraved, the lower colour is revealed to create a legible contrast. Metal labels provide a strong carrier in outdoor and heavy-industry conditions. Printed acrylic or suitable plastics can be used for multicolour logos, symbols and bespoke panel designs.

A label should not be chosen with a lower durability rating than the environment in which the cable operates. Where oil, fuel, cleaning chemicals, constant sunlight, high temperature or marine conditions are present, the material and marking method should be tested separately.

Engraving, laser marking and printing: the difference

On layered plastics, engraving removes the top layer and reveals the colour below. Laser marking enables serial numbers, codes and symbols to be produced on suitable metals and engineering plastics. UV or screen printing can be preferred for multicolour designs and larger graphic areas.

The production method should match legibility, number of colours, quantity, variable data and the operating environment. For every label type, a pre-production sample is the safest way to confirm type size and mounting.

Design rules for legibility

  1. Keep the project coding system consistent across all panels.
  2. Set text size according to the actual reading distance.
  3. Use high-contrast backgrounds and text.
  4. Choose a simple typeface that prevents similar characters from being confused.
  5. Do not leave the label on a cable bend, a cover edge or beneath a device.
  6. Test QR codes and barcodes with the intended scanner before production.

Mounting options

Cable labels can use tie holes, stainless wire, cable ties, clips or a wrap-around method. Panel labels can be mounted with a high-performance adhesive, screws, rivets or a carrier profile. Surface paint, texture, temperature and the need for removal all matter when choosing an adhesive.

Screw and rivet holes should be kept sufficiently away from text and code areas, and opening the cover must not obstruct reading the label. If the mounting method is included in the drawing at the start of a project, holes and cut-outs can be prepared together with production.

Label data should come from the same source as the project diagram

Manually copying cable and panel codes increases the risk of errors. Where possible, variable data should be prepared from an approved Excel/CSV list or project output, followed by a sample check.

Information needed for an order

  • Label list and the variable text required on every label
  • Size, colour, material and quantity
  • Indoor or outdoor conditions, plus temperature and chemical exposure
  • Mounting method, hole diameter and hole spacing
  • Typeface, symbols, logo and colour codes
  • Barcode or QR code data, where applicable

At our workshop in Bursa Nilüfer Organised Industrial Zone, we make cable and panel labels from single pieces through to serial-numbered production. Material options include engraved ABS and Resopal labels as well as metal solutions.

The right label shortens maintenance time

When cable and panel labels are planned alongside the project diagram, operating environment and mounting method, they make it easier to find the correct equipment even years later. Share your label list and environmental conditions to request a material and production recommendation.

Frequently asked questions

What material are cable labels made from?

Depending on the operating environment, plastic, laminated material, stainless steel or aluminium can be considered. Heat, UV, oil, chemicals and mechanical wear determine the material choice.

Which labels are used in an electrical panel?

Panel-name and serial labels, device-function labels, button and warning signs, terminal-block numbers, cable markers, safety warnings and circuit identifiers can all be used.

Is an engraved label more durable than a printed label?

Durability depends on the material and environment. Engraving provides permanent contrast on layered materials, while UV or screen printing provides multicolour information. The decision should be made from samples and environmental conditions.

What information should a cable label contain?

Depending on the project standard, it can contain a cable number, start and end points, circuit or device code, voltage class and, when needed, a QR code or barcode.
