Vehicle chassis and engine number labels:
how should they be selected?

An identification label on a vehicle should be assessed together with accurate data, suitable metal, permanent marking and secure mounting.

Examples of a Land Rover Defender chassis VIN label and its application on a vehicle

A vehicle chassis and engine number label is a technical product carrying identification data for a vehicle, engine, item of equipment or part. On these labels, data accuracy, authorised purpose of use, material durability and mounting method matter as much as appearance. A production request should be assessed within the framework of verifiable documentation and applicable rules.

Important principle of use

Producing a chassis or engine number label does not replace official registration, inspection, a certificate of conformity or approval by a competent authority. For lost or damaged identification parts, the procedures of the vehicle owner, manufacturer, service provider and relevant authorities must be followed.

What information appears on the label?

Depending on the vehicle type and original technical design, information may include chassis/VIN, engine number, model, type, manufacturer, weight values, production date, homologation or part code. When a new label is prepared, text must not be guessed from a photograph; it must be verified against the registration document, manufacturer documentation or authorised technical documentation.

Even one error in a character string can cause a mismatch with the vehicle record. Approved data should therefore be checked again in writing by the customer before production.

How should the material be selected?

MaterialKey strengthAssessment
AluminiumLightweight, machinable and corrosion resistantA balanced option for many vehicle and equipment identification plates
Stainless steelHigh mechanical and environmental resistanceCan be considered for heavy equipment and harsh environments
Special-coated metalA specific contrast and appearanceShould suit the original technical construction and marking method

Thickness, surface finish and edge form are as important as the metal itself. Temperature, oil and cleaning chemicals in the engine bay; moisture, UV and physical contact on a door opening or body should be considered. See our metal label guide for a general material comparison.

How is the marking method determined?

Laser marking can permanently form serial numbers, text and codes on a suitable metal. Some original applications may include etching, embossing, printing or other security features. A new product must not be imitated independently of the original technical requirements; the purpose of the request and legal compliance must be confirmed.

Character height, line spacing and contrast should be selected for real reading conditions. Preparing a sample for small text confirms both legibility and the appearance on the material.

Conditions that affect durability

  • Temperature and temperature changes in the engine compartment
  • Oil, fuel, antifreeze and cleaning chemicals
  • Water, salt, moisture and corrosion risk
  • Vibration, impact and mechanical abrasion
  • Sunlight and outdoor exposure
  • Paint, texture and geometry of the mounting surface

Adhesive, screw or rivet?

The mounting method must match the vehicle's original design and authorised technical requirements. With adhesive mounting, assess surface cleanliness, temperature and whether the adhesive is suitable for automotive surfaces. Screws or rivets provide a more mechanical connection, but randomly drilling the body can create corrosion and safety problems.

Hole diameter, spacing and label dimensions should be taken from existing mounting points and verified from a technical drawing or physical sample where possible.

What must be verified before production?

  1. The requester's relationship to and authority for the vehicle or equipment
  2. The exact chassis, engine and model data on official or manufacturer documents
  3. Label dimensions, metal type, thickness and surface colour
  4. Mounting location, hole dimensions and fastening method
  5. Marking technique, character layout and legibility
  6. Local legal, registration, inspection and service requirements

How should photographs and samples be prepared?

Before a damaged label is removed, photograph it straight-on, at high resolution and with a measurement reference beside it. Record hole centres, corner radii and total dimensions separately. Deriving dimensions only from photographic perspective can cause errors.

Unreadable information must not be guessed; it should be completed from authorised documents. In serial or fleet applications, an approved data table reduces copying errors.

Information needed when making a request

  • Vehicle or equipment type and intended use
  • Appropriate documents verifying authority and ownership
  • Approved text and number data
  • Exact label dimensions and mounting details
  • Material, surface and environmental conditions
  • Quantity and variable-data list

At our workshop in Bursa Nilüfer Organised Industrial Zone, we provide technical production support for vehicle chassis and engine number labels only for verifiable and legitimate requests.

The right choice begins with verified information

Choosing a vehicle identification label depends on authorised use and data accuracy before metal, marking and mounting. Share the documentation, dimensions and details of the existing application to request a technical assessment.

Frequently asked questions

Can a chassis number label be reproduced?

It should only be assessed when requested by the vehicle owner or authorised party, supported by verifiable documents and an intended use that complies with applicable law. Producing a label does not replace official registration or approval.

Which metal is used for a vehicle label?

Aluminium or stainless steel can be considered according to the original technical requirement and application. Thickness, surface, corrosion and mounting conditions must be selected together.

Should a chassis label be adhesive or riveted?

The mounting method must be determined by the vehicle's original application, surface and authorised technical requirement. An arbitrary mounting method should not be used.

Is laser marking used on vehicle labels?

On suitable metal surfaces, laser marking can create durable and legible data. The method should be assessed according to material, contrast, legislation and original technical requirements.
